De La Hoya vs. Mayweather

So last night was the much hyped Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather fight. It will be the fight of the year, the pundits said! It could be an all time classic, the other said!

Sadly, it did not live up to the hype.

But first a background - yesterday being Cinco De Mayo, TJC was raring to go out somewhere since he loves him some Cinco De Mayo. I just wanted to watch the fight somewhere, and would have just been as happy watching it on Kim at my apartment. (Oh, for those who don't know, Kim is what I named the TV I bought last year. She's so purty). But I was very glad I ended up going out.

After meeting up around 7:30 to get Filipino food, we ended up going to Bounce Deuce. $20 cover to get in because of the fight, and all the tables were fully booked already so we ended up standing by the bar for the next 4-5 hours. The Bulls-Pistons and then Jazz-Rockets basketball games were on, so we had that to entertain us. Well that and the phenomenally attractive bartender working. My goodness.

Anyway, about the fight:

It was kind of a boring fight, really. De La Hoya could not use his strength and size advantage over Mayweather effectively, as Mayweather was too fast and quick. Oscar also tried the Sugar Ray Leonard method of stealing rounds late by flurrying during the last 10 seconds of the round. Mayweather was not going to engage De La Hoya, and Oscar did not do enough I thought to bring the fight harder to him. He had to bully Floyd, I thought, and that meant going in there, head first, taking a few punches to get his best ones in and Oscar did not do that/want to do that. Seriously, Oscar had to eat a few punches in order for him to win decisively. I thought that a lot of those rounds were too close to call, and turns out the judges agreed with me as Floyd won by split decision.

All in all, I left Bounce with 3 thoughts:

A) That was so WRONG that Floyd came out wearing a Mexican flag on his trunks and robe, and with a sombrero to boot! On Cinco De Mayo no less!

B) All this talk from Floyd about retiring... I think $20 mil for him for a rematch would probably get him in the ring vs. Oscar again. And this time, I hope it's a better fight.

C) That bartender was hot.
