Movie Review: Pirates of the Carribbean: At World's End

The short of it:

A surprising 4 out of 8 on the ErwiNation Rating Scale.

The long of it:

Making more headway on that summer movie list, folks.

But about the movie - maybe it was the lowered expectations I had due to the so-so word of mouth about the movie I heard from friends and what not, but I enjoyed Pirates 3 a lot more than I thought I would. I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than I did Pirates 2 which I thought dragged on too long and had too many subplots.

Yes, this one had too many subplots as well; every character and their mother had their own frigging agenda in this one and at times the plot seemed too bloated as a result. Once again, I could have done without the Will Turner-Liz Swann individual and combined subplots/storyline (that wedding scene was just ridiculous). The whole Barbosa part was fine, but I would rather have had more background on the Davey Jones/Calypso story than the Turner-Swann idiocy. And too many turns and back room deals amongst the characters as well.

But I guess in the end, I enjoyed it because Jack Sparrow in this one was closer to the Jack Sparrow of Pirates 1 than the one we saw in Pirates 2. And I must admit, I didn't notice 3 hours pass in this one unlike Pirates 2, which was excruciating at times. Nevertheless, you take out an hour from the movie by eliminating most of the Turner-Swann nonsense and you would have had a 6 Nation movie in my book.

And as for the scene after the credits roll - eh. TJC and I had more fun making up imaginary conversations the boy might have had:

"Mom wasn't lying! I really do have a ghost pirate for a dad!"

"I told all the kids in school about it too! I told them, wait till I see the green flash!"

"My dad is so cool, he ferries the dead!"

"Oh, like Charon on the River Styx??"

"I'm English like you, you idiot, not Greek. Where did you get an idea like that??"

Anyway, if there really will be a Pirates 4, 5 and 6, lose the excess baggage and keep it focused on Sparrow. Thanks.
