The short of it: 5 out of 8 Nations
The long of it:
Watched Sweeney Todd with TJC, my sister and her husband last night, as the latter two just flew into town to visit a couple of days beforehand. Am a Tim Burton and Johnny Depp fan, so was looking forward to it.
I never watched the musical it was based on, so while I knew the basic storyline, I had no idea what the twists and turns were. I wasn't that worried about Johnny Depp's or Helena Bonham-Carter's singing voices; it's not Broadway where you have to be great every night. Post production tricks can make anybody sound pretty good if need be, and the two of them were not bad at all.
It was a pretty intense movie, and the ending was crazy, and the movie itself is very gory. But I still liked it a lot, and the "Joanna" song was stuck in my head for the longest time.
The funniest part: during the previews, they showed one for this horror flick due out in early 2008, about a bunch of young people in the Mayan ruins unleashing some curse or something. As they flashed the title at the end, TJC suddenly started laughing to himself, and he goes: "I can't believe they named that movie The Runs!!!!". I turn to him and go "No fool, it's named The Ruins." Sheesh.
