That was the best episode the show has ever had. It was the best thing I've seen on TV in quite a while as well. Besides the usual Sean link, I feel compelled to write my own thoughts as well. Be warned though that spoilers abound if you click on the "Read More" link.
Still here? Good.
I was speechless after that episode ended. The fact that the island part was the flashback and we were looking at Jack post-rescue... it was mind boggling. When it was Kate who walked out of the shadows at the end, I just thought: "Wow. We just got Keyser Soze'd".
But it was not as if that episode was a one trick pony, namely being the twist at the end. Everything leading up to that point was just great. Some thoughts in random order:
1) Hugo coming to the rescue in the van, driving through walls and people like B.A. Baracus - how awesome was that??? Follow it up with Sayid with the neck scissors.. Wow.
2) Note to Tim Kring: That's how you pay off a final confrontation after building it up. The suspense and tension in the Jack/Locke confrontation that has been building since "Man of Science, Man of Faith" was intoxicating. I had severe doubts whether or not Jack would live to tell the tale - again another indication of how Lost has made you expect anything and everything.
3) My favorite line of the night was Naomi to Jack: "So what did you do before you became Moses?". Ha. Sounds like something I would say.
4) Yes, I feel bad about Charlie dying now. And he finally put his habit of writing on his hands to good use. But what the hell was he doing ratting off Juliet to the Fembots?? On second thought, maybe I don't feel so bad about him dying now.
5) Related note: Is Mikhail a frigging zombie?? Why won't he die??
6) The viewing Jack went to, which Kate wanted no part of in the end - I think it was Ben's.
7) Thanks, Sean for mentioning just as the episode started that Macolm David Kelly was in the opening credits. Sheesh. And the far off, looking-up camera angle did not hide the fact he's about 10 feet taller now than when we last saw him. He might be a full grown adult by the time we see him next.
8) Jack's beatdown on Ben was a long time coming. Man, I almost started pounding on my throw pillows as well, I was that pumped.
9) Just like that "I Love Lisa" episode of The Simpsons when you can tell the exact moment Ralph's heart broke, you could see Kate's heart breaking in two when she saw Jack and Juliet's peck.
10) Sean and BTC both hated the fake Jack beard. I think it just needed some trimming around the edges. Hah.
11) You think when Carl saw that Danielle was Alex's mother, he thought "That's what she's gonna look like in 40 years. I might need to think this one through."?
12) Jin obviously did not get the memo from John Woo that Asians never miss with handguns.
13) Congratulations, Lost. Starting with Episode 14 of this season, you regained the vacant title of best show on TV and did not let go one bit. It was like every Wednesday night was a San Diego Chargers football game and Lost was LaDanian Tomlinson: you just knew he was gonna score a TD.
14) The long wait till Feb. 2008 begins now. Sigh.
