There have been many articles floating around about this all day, but I like this one from Superherohype the best.
Some highlights:
- Iron Man 2 will introduce Thor, whose movie will be out a few months afterward. Classic comic book stuff - introduce a "new" character in a "sure thing" book/movie then spin him off.
- There will be an Avengers movie, and it'll be a few months after the Captain America movie comes out.
Sean and I were discussing what would be the best way to do the Avengers movie, as there have been many versions of the team through the years. Most people forget that the original Avengers consisted of Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man, Wasp and the Hulk. Then you have the team led by Captain America (probably the most prevalent Avenger image in most people's minds), with Iron Man, Thor, Hawkeye, Vision, etc. You also have the New Avengers with Captain America, Iron Man, Spidey, Wolverine, Luke Cage, etc.
But I agree with Sean that what they should do is do the Ultimates version and storyline. And judging by the movies they are releasing right before it, the references they have made in the Iron Man movie, the cameo of a certain character in the upcoming Hulk movie, and most importantly the character who made a cameo in said Iron Man movie, it sounds like that's how they'll do it.
The Ultimates team is basically Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man, Wasp, and a few others teaming together through the efforts of Nick Fury to stop the Hulk, and then after that confronting an even greater danger. Most people know already about who makes a cameo after the credits of Iron Man and what he talks about, so put two and two together....
All in all, very exciting times for the Marvel Movie Universe. The only thing DC has gotten right the last few years is the Batman franchise; maybe they should pay more attention to the House of Ideas.
