Serena wins the Australian Open

So with the weather being ridiculously cold in NYC on Friday, I figured, I'll stay in and watch the Sharapova-Serena Aussie Open finals match live at 9:30 PM. The actual match itself started around 9:40, give or take, and barely an hour later after Serena destroyed Sharapova, I am flipping over to MTV watching True Life: I Am A Sumo Wrestler.

But back to the tennis: Wow. We were given a not-so-subtle reminder by Serena that when she is healthy and focused, she is still the woman to beat in women's tennis. Sharapova's confidence in her serve was just shot, and while she had some good moments, her best moments for me really was just looking good because her tennis game yesterday was non-existent.

Federer plays later today and I'm looking forward to waking up Sunday morning and checking out how badly he beat Gonzalez. Yeah, I don't think Gonzalez has a snowball's chance in hell. I like Federer a lot, and I would love to see him win the Grand Slam this year (and in the process, cross off #6: See A Male Tennis Player Win The Grand Slam in my "Sports Related Things I'd Love To See In My Lifetime" list). His dominance reminds me so much of Steffi Graf's, especially 1988 when she won the Grand Slam and the Olympic Gold medal for the "Golden Slam".

It was crazy how he just schooled Roddick in the semis. Afterwards, I couldn't help but laugh at Federer's post match quotes. Intentional or not, it was pretty much "You're just not at my level, Andy". A sampling:

"I had one of these days when everything worked," the Swiss star said. "I was unbeatable. I was playing out of my mind. I am shocked myself."

and

"I've played good matches here, but never really almost destroyed somebody," Federer said.

I really think he was just messing with Roddick's head by letting him win the exhibition tournament final 2 weeks ago, and now when it counts, he just schools him.

Of course, after all this, I could just end up writing a "I can't believe Roger lost" post tomorrow. But I'm not holding my breath.
