Two Will Play HBO's "Game"

Or so says this article from The Hollywood Reporter.

In summary: Peter Dinklage has been cast to play Tyrion in HBO's Game of Thrones pilot, with Tom McCarthy tapped to direct.

Great news. Perhaps Winter really is coming to HBO.

HBO Greenlights "A Song Of Ice And Fire" Pilot

Awesome news. Hopefully it will get picked up, and as an added bonus, it would not distract George R.R. Martin from FINALLY finishing A Dance With Dragons (Book 5 in the series). Read the Hollywood Reporter article here.

HBO And A Song Of Ice and Fire Update

From George R. R. Martin's blog posting:

"I have some exciting news to share.

(But please, guys and gals, don't get TOO excited. This is what it is, and so far that's all it is, so don't make any assumptions).

HBO has just exercised its option, and purchased the television rights to A GAME OF THRONES.

For those of you who don't know Hollywood, an option gives a production company the right to buy a property (a book, a screenplay, whatever) at a certain agreed-upon price for a certain period of time (a year, six months, whatever). When that time runs out, they can let the option lapse, renew the option, or exercise the option and buy the property. The last is what HBO has just done.

What they have NOT done is greenlight the project. A GAME OF THRONES remains in development. They're still budgeting, still looking at locations (Spain and the Czech Republic at present, I hear). No decision has been reached, so any celebration would be premature. In Hollywood it is always best not to assume something is going to happen until it actually happens.

Even so... this is a very encouraging sign, and one that suggests a continued high level of enthusiasm and commitment for A GAME OF THRONES at HBO.

So keep your fingers crossed."

A Song of Ice and Fire update: A Dance With Dragons

Below is George R.R. Martin's latest update on the status of Book 5 of his A Song of Ice and Fire series: A Dance With Dragons. I sure hope we'll get to see this book in print by the end of 2007, as I can't wait to visit the world of Westeros once again. But I'm not holding my breath. Sigh. Between this and Robert Jordan falling seriously ill just as he is writing the last book of The Wheel of Time series... Anyway, here's the official word from Mr. Martin:

DANCING IN THE DARK

I finally finished A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, but my dog ate the manuscript and there was no copy, so I'm starting over.

What, you don't believe me?

Okay, okay. We don't have a dog at present, and A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is not done.

I'm still writing. Certain storylines are going well. Others, not so much, but that's what rewriting is for, yes?

I have to admit, these updates aren't working the way I hoped they would. I started them in the hopes that they would help stem the flood of emails asking about the next book. They haven't. I get just as many emails, only now they're asking about the next update. Yes, I know I said I'd have an update in "early January," and January came and went and there was no update. I can read a calendar too. The reason there was no update...

Well, the book's not done. And we've had home renovations. And the book's not done. And there's been work on other projects, on comics and The World of Ice & Fire and the games and the new Wild Cards book, Inside Straight. And there was football, and cons to attend, and a signing tour, and the holidays, and did I mention those home renovations?

The truth is, these updates do make me feel like a twelve-year old trying to explain to teacher why he isn't turning in his essay, and knowing she isn't going to buy the "dog ate my homework" ruse any more than you guys do.

The only update that I want to write is the one that says, "A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is done." That's the one you want, and that's the one that I want to write... but when the book isn't done, having to come online and say so every few months becomes a stressful and unpleasant task. I really do appreciate the fact that so many people are so eager to read the next installment in A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE and I wish I could get it to you right now, but you guys read a lot faster than I can write.

When A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is finished, I will post that news here. The moment I finish the book, I will log on and make the announcement. If this message is still here, that means the book is not done yet. Until such time as I can trumpet that news, however, this page will remain the same.

The next update will be the one that announces that the DANCE is done.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin is the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. I first read this book about 7,8 years ago and was instantly hooked. A couple of weeks ago, it was announced that HBO has acquired the rights to turn the novels into a television series so read the books now before it hits the boob tube in a few years.

Here are some links to critics reviews about the book:
